SUMMARY:Old Colorado City Farmers Market
DESCRIPTION:The Old Colorado City Farmers’ Market has been a part of the Colorado Springs/Westside community for over 35 years! It is one of the most successful farmers markets in Colorado and is incredibly lucky to have some of the most loyal and amazing customers. \nThe market was started with the ideology that Colorado farmers and businesses should be closer to their customers\, and to provide an environment where citizens can feel more in touch with where their food/goods come from. After all these years we continue to stick to those beliefs and pride ourselves on being one of Colorado’s only grower friendly markets. We believe it is important to keep a farmer’s market what its meant to be\, a “Farmer’s Market”. \nMany of the vendors that are at the market today have been there either from the start or for decades! \nUnlike many markets today\, the Old Colorado City Farmers’ Market has always been owned and managed by a vendor at the market. Frank Schmidt of Schmidt Apiaries has been at the market with his honey from the beginning. He started working with honey roughly 40 years ago and can still be seen down at the market every Saturday with his daughter Cindy and son-in-law Rick. \nFrom our humble beginnings to what the market has become today we feel truly honored being a part of the community. We’ve enjoyed building a relationship with our customers and look forward to seeing future generations. \nThank you so much for all the support over the years and the countless years to come!

SUMMARY:Tri-Lakes Kids Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Tri-Lakes Lions Club is hosting the annual Tri-Lakes Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday\, June 1\, at the lake in Palmer Lake. The fishing tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude with presentation of awards at 11:30 a.m. This event is targeted for kids 4 through 14. The derby is FREE\, although kids are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to Tri-Lakes Cares at registration. Colorado anglers of all ages can fish without a license on this date\, so parents and other chaperons are encouraged to bring their fishing gear and join in the fun. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife is stocking the lake with trout for the tournament. Registered participants will need to bring their own fishing equipment and bait. For those who do not have fishing gear\, the Colorado Fish and Wildlife will bring a limited supply of rods\, reels\, and bait for kids. \nTournament registration will be on the east side of the lake next to the bathrooms and park pavilion. There will be fishing officials around the lake measuring fish and reporting results. Prizes will be awarded for the longest fish in three age categories. Leaderboards for each age category will be posted at the park pavilion. Come early as the Derby normally has 300 kids participate. Hundreds of fish are caught and measured each year.

SUMMARY:Taste of Tri-Lakes Cares
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the Taste of Tri-Lakes Cares on Wednesday\, May 15 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Spruce Mountain Events\, 14771 Spruce Mountain Road in Larkspur.  Celebrate an evening of fun\, celebration and tasty treats at this signature fundraising event for Taste of Tri-Lakes Cares! This ticketed event will feature local restaurants and other food related businesses showing off their creativity and will be extra special as they celebrate their 40-year anniversary. \nModeled after the Food Network’s television show “Chopped”\, chefs from local restaurants\, catering companies\, food trucks and other food related businesses will test their skills and create small bites for sampling based on ingredients from the Tri-Lakes Cares pantry. These are the same ingredients that clients choose when “shopping” in our Market. \nWhile you enjoy sampling and mingling\, you will have the opportunity to play games which highlight a program or service that Tri-Lakes Cares provides in our local community – “Pin the Bandage on the Thumb” to highlight the Neighborhood Nurse Center or “Balance Beam” to showcase the STABLe program (curious? Attend and learn more!). \nMidway through the event\, there’s a break for a short program to share stories of people impacted by the help provided by Tri-Lakes Cares and supported by you. They’ll also offer a vision for future plans – where will we go for the next 40 years? You will be given an opportunity to make a donation at that time. \nAt the close of the evening\, you’ll be able to cast your vote for your favorite restaurant creation – the winning chef will get bragging rights for a year! In 2022 it was Arlene’s Beans and in 2023 it was O’Malley’s! \nPurchase your ticket (https://secure.qgiv.com/for/totlc2024/event/tasteoftrilakescares2024/) today for this event.  See you there!

SUMMARY:NATIONAL PUPPY DAY
DESCRIPTION:Observed each year on March 23\, National Puppy Day celebrates the unconditional love and affection puppies bring to our lives. Their cuddles and wiggles make us smile and without a doubt\, there are squeals of delight when there are puppies around! \nThe day also brings awareness to the need for care of and homes for orphaned pups as well as to educate people about the horrors of puppy mills across the country. Puppies are a big responsibility. Be sure to consider everything involved and adopt from a shelter. The puppies there need love and a home just as much as any other and they grow into loyal pets\, too! \nAccording to the ASPCA\, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. Some of these dogs come with litters of puppies. If you’re seeking a puppy to start your furry family\, check the shelters first. When these abandoned and abused animals find their way to a shelter\, each one needs a forever home and their potential is limitless. \nThere are several shelters in our area.  A good place to begin your search is through National Mill Dog Rescue.  More information at https://nmdr.org.

SUMMARY:National Read Across America
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd\, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual event is part of Read Across America\, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. Since the event is designed to encourage reading in children and is fostered through the schools\, when March 2 lands on a weekend\, as it is this year\, the day is observed on the closest school day\, which will be March 1. \nThis motivational and awareness day calls all children and youth in every community across the United States to celebrate reading. It encourages them to read where ever they are. Great ways to inspire reading in children include: \nKeep books everywhere you spend time. Put them in the car\, in every room of the house\, and tuck them in backpacks and purses. Make them easily accessible. \nVisit the library often. Knowing how to use the library and learning the benefits of a library fosters a love of reading as well as genuine respect for the services libraries provide. \nGet caught reading. Children imitate what they see the adults around them do. Whether they see you read a magazine\, newspaper\, or novel\, let them know reading is the cool thing to do. \nRead to your children. No matter their age\, reading aloud strengthens their vocabulary and language skills. It also opens up opportunities for discussion. \nHave your children read to you\, too. You never know what you might learn!
