SUMMARY:National Read Across America
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2\, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual event is part of Read Across America\, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. Since the event is designed to encourage reading in children and is fostered through the schools\, when March 2 lands on a weekend\, as it is this year\, the day is observed on the closest school day\, which is March 3 this year. \nThis motivational and awareness day calls all children and youth in every community across the United States to celebrate reading. It encourages them to read where ever they are. Great ways to inspire reading in children include: \nKeep books everywhere you spend time. Put them in the car\, in every room of the house\, and tuck them in backpacks and purses. Make them easily accessible. \nVisit the library often. Knowing how to use the library and learning the benefits of a library fosters a love of reading as well as genuine respect for the services libraries provide. \nGet caught reading. Children imitate what they see the adults around them do. Whether they see you read a magazine\, newspaper\, or novel\, let them know reading is the cool thing to do. \nRead to your children. No matter their age\, reading aloud strengthens their vocabulary and language skills. It also opens up opportunities for discussion.

SUMMARY:North Pole Holiday Craft Fair
DESCRIPTION:On December 7 the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club will sponsor the 18th annual North Pole Craft Fair. The North Pole Craft Fair is held at the Grace Best Education Center on Jefferson Street in Monument. Vendors purchase space to present their wares for sale and local churches prepare baked goods for purchase by craft fair patrons. Entry is free but patrons are asked to bring a non-perishable food item that is donated to Tri-Lakes Cares. All other proceeds are used to execute the philanthropic element of the MHKC mission. \nLast year the event drew more than 1\,300 visitors to Grace Best Education Center at 66 N Jefferson St. in downtown Monument. Shoppers chose from 63 vendors. Tri-Lakes Cares (a community-based\, volunteer-supported\, resource center is dedicated to improving people’s lives through emergency\, self-sufficiency and relief programs) sponsored their popular Cookie Walk which sold 119 dozen Christmas cookies that netted $682. Additionally\, Tri-Lakes Cares\, received $1\,476 in cash donations as well as 638 pounds of food\, toys and games. \nAll of these donations have a significant impact on the Christmas experience for the families that Tri-Lakes Cares serves. We also received donations for “4 KidzSports” which included a variety of gently used sporting equipment. All proceeds from booth fees help our Club fund a variety of Lewis Palmer School District 38 programs and scholarships. Bottom line…every net dollar earned is put back into our community to help kids! \nMonument Hill Kiwanis – Service Since 1974. Making a Positive Difference for Youth and Our Community.

SUMMARY:Shop Small Business Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate at locally-owned businesses in historic downtown with special holiday events and offers on Saturday\, November 30\, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. When you shop locally\, rather than online or in other cities\, more revenue stays here\, and that directly benefits this community. This is the most important shopping day of the year for our local economy. Shopping and dining at locally owned businesses may not seem like such a big deal\, but the economic impact is vitally important to the economic health of our town. \nSmall Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities across the country and is part of the larger Shop Small Movement. Founded by American Express in 2010\, this day is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the U.S. \nChristmas Stroll in Old Colorado City \nKick off the holiday season with a special evening in Old Colorado City\, Colorado Avenue & 25th Street in Colorado Springs on Saturday\, November 30\, 5:00-8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:Several years ago\, a small group of patriotic volunteers formed a nonprofit organization to host an annual Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade. Their mission is simple: To honor all veterans and to educate and inspire community awareness while paying tribute to the service and sacrifices all veterans have endured in the pursuit of freedom. \nIn just this short time\, the parade has grown to be one of the biggest and best in the United States. This has only been possible because of the work of hundreds of community volunteers and the generous financial support of the local business community which covers all the parade’s costs. \nThis wonderful parade tradition continues where veterans are enthusiastically cheered as they walk down Tejon Street in Colorado Springs. For that reason\, and because they encourage participation by all veterans (including those who are not members of a formal organization)\, veterans come from all over southern Colorado to participate in the parade. \nThe Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade is entirely funded through donations from local businesses and individual contributors. This year’s parade will be held on Saturday\, November 9. Visit https://cosvetsparade.org/home for parade particulars. See you at the parade!
